    I have the opposite problem. I know how high I want my ledger to be, and I know the rise of the roof I need. I just need to figure out the height of the wall the rafters will be running to. I'll figure it out! This helps.

      @@livingincentraliowa I like to remove the drywall and get it away from the window because of moisture reasons. Drywall has a paper face and loves to grow mold. If you put wood over it, you are essentially trapping moisture. I also like to remove the drywall so that I foam the gap around the window and the studs... stopping air and moisture from coming through.

    I should have watched this before attempting to use my circular saw for the first time. I tried cutting timber with it supported at both ends and cutting in the middle and you’re right it bound up. What an idiot so thanks for pointing something out that should have been obvious to me.

      They came out pretty good! I had to build some stairs from the parking area to a door in the warehouse I work in. The only problem I ran into was the asphalt in the parking lot is uneven from one stringer to the other but I can block up one side and put some cold patch around the base. I'll only get better the more I do it. Thanks again!

    I was wondering if you have a video showing the use of the router to work the inside edges. I have a frame that has beveled edges on the inside and I want to take them off so it’s just a straight edge down (a 90-degree angle vs. beveled).

    I’m am just learning about woodworking and your videos are the best! I was wondering about flattening the surface of a wood slab that was cut with a chainsaw. I have one (24ish x 36ish”) and want to make it a tabletop but not sure about the best way to do it. I was going to use my orbital sander but was told to use my router. Suggestions?

      The router works great. I don't have a video on that but look up what a router sled (slab) jig is. There are also local woodworking shops that will flatten slabs.

    Thanks for taking the time to make this video. Very helpful and instructional. I had always used traditional hand saws as a means of burning some extra calories every time I had some sawing to do. Unfortunately some years ago I was diagnosed with Parkinsons and now I am using electric saws more often. Some of the things in this video were very helpful

    doesn't the joist hanger trick bring the whole load onto like two rings of grain? I feel like the wrong board would split between that cut and the bottom of the first kick if the load was too high

      Yes you are right, that could happen. They have updated hangers made specifically for that so I would recommend using those.

    After watching several circular saw tutorials, I realized that you are the only person who brought up the right and left side blade saws. I still haven't tried my saw because I'm not yet comfortable enough. I'm going to be extra cautious since it appears that I purchased a left side blade saw. :::sigh::: Oh, well, live and learn! Thank you for a well put together, informative video. I, too, am a "senior" woman learning to use power tools. 😊

    Just started my own business and this is my first front door stair job which needs 7 stairs. I've been in the Maintenance field my whole life so I understand the terminology and can obviously use tools. I have just never had to do a build/repair that requires structures. I've been watching so many videos and yes they are helpful. But your video was from step A to Z with in depth information that wasn't done or emphasized in other videos. Thank you!

      Not really. It would be best with a flat top grind blade, because it will leave the cut square at the bottom. However, any blade for the most part would work. Hope that helps.

    Hi I have a squeaky staircase without having access from the bottom. I am trying to drill some screws into the tread to hit the riser so I can fix them together since the wood dried and now there is friction between them and that is where the sounds comes from. Can you tell mee how to measure so I hit the riser based on the situation above ?

      You might be able to see nail holes in the risers which will tell you where the framing is. You might even have to drive some nails in the riser to find their location and then repaint the risers when you are done.

    What could be a problem with 2x6 rafters if one side is flush at the plumb cut and the seat cut but the other side is off both? But both rafters are the exact same length and cuts?

    I have a (rational) fear of table saws and some tools in general. I feel more confident using my dad’s table saw tomorrow now, thank you! (One of my uncle’s diagonally removed 2.5 fingers and another lost 2 fingers to a plumber’s tool (the drain snake), almost lost his arm to a band snapping too and cut off (but reattached) a finger with a saw too. I promise they’re very smart men, they just work quick and for themselves so what’s OSHA when you gotta get the job done?
